Summer is the season of vacations, travel, and outdoor fun.

While these activities bring joy and relaxation, they can also disrupt our regular fitness routines. With irregular schedules, delicious (and often unhealthy) food options, and the allure of lounging by the beach, maintaining a fitness regimen can be challenging. However, staying fit during summer travel isn't impossible. Here are some tips to help you enjoy your vacations without compromising your fitness goals.
So, I think we can agree these are the main challenges…
Irregular Schedules: Traveling often means an unpredictable schedule. Flights, road trips, and sightseeing can make it hard to find time for regular workouts.
Limited Access to Gyms: Not all accommodations have fitness facilities, and finding a gym in an unfamiliar place can be a hassle.
Tempting Food Choices: Summer vacations are synonymous with indulging in local cuisines and cocktails by the pool, which are often high in calories.
Lack of Routine: Being out of your usual environment can disrupt your regular workout and meal planning habits.
Now here is what we CAN do about it…
Plan Ahead: Before you leave, research your destination. Look for nearby gyms, parks, or running trails. Many hotels offer fitness centers or have partnerships with local gyms.
Pack Smart: Bring along portable fitness equipment like resistance bands, a jump rope, or even a yoga mat. These items are lightweight and can help you perform a variety of exercises in your hotel room or a nearby park.
Stay Active on the Go: Incorporate physical activities into your travel plans. Walk or bike instead of taking taxis or public transport. Explore the city on foot, hike local trails, or swim in the hotel pool or ocean. Remember, we are still trying to hit our goal of 10,000 steps each day!
Short, Effective Workouts: High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) workouts are perfect for vacation because they are short and effective. You can do a full-body workout in 20-30 minutes, leaving you plenty of time for vacation activities.
Healthy Eating: Enjoy local cuisine but in moderation. Try to balance indulgent meals with healthier options. Visit local markets for fresh fruits and vegetables, and stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
Routine Adaptation: If your regular routine isn’t possible, adapt it. If you can’t go to the gym, use bodyweight exercises like push-ups, squats, and planks. If morning runs are out, take an evening stroll.
Stay Accountable: Use my fitness apps or use a buddy to stay motivated.
In fact, Here's a quick, no-equipment workout you can do in your hotel room…
Warm-Up: 5 minutes of jumping jacks or high knees.
Circuit: Perform each exercise for 45 seconds, then rest for 15 seconds. Repeat the circuit 3 times.
Squats
Push-ups
Plank
Lunges
Burpees
Cool-Down: 5 minutes of stretching.
With all that said…
While summer travel can pose challenges to maintaining your fitness routine, it’s entirely possible to stay active and healthy with a little planning and creativity. By incorporating these tips, you can enjoy your vacation while still making progress towards your fitness goals. Remember, the key is balance—enjoy your time off, indulge in new experiences, and stay active in ways that fit your travel lifestyle.
